About Us

For Homes, Communities, and Public Spaces

Big Mac Slabs furniture is used across Aotearoa in a wide range of settings. From backyard tables and swings, to park seating, schools, aged care facilities, and hospitality venues, our work is designed to suit the environment it serves.

We regularly work with families, councils, schools, early childhood education centres, aged care providers, and commercial clients who value durability, safety, and locally made products.

The Creative Centre

Our Paraparaumu Creative Centre is both our workshop and public-facing space. Here, you can see our furniture outdoors, touch the timber, explore finishes, and understand how each piece is built before it finds its place in the world.

From Arborist Roots to

Purpose-Built Furniture

Big Mac Slabs began in 2003 as a byproduct of founder Andy’s arborist business in Masterton. Macrocarpa trees felled due to age or safety were too good to waste, so they were repurposed into solid timber slabs and simple furniture pieces.

What started as a practical solution quickly became something bigger. By 2008, furniture had become the core business, driven by a growing demand for natural, durable alternatives to the low-quality plastic furniture flooding the market.

Growing with Purpose

In 2009, Big Mac Slabs opened a site in Plimmerton to service increasing demand across the greater Wellington region. As the business continued to grow nationwide, the entire operation relocated in 2015 to the Paraparaumu Creative Centre.

This move allowed Big Mac Slabs to reduce transport impact, centralise production, and create a space where customers could see furniture outdoors in real New Zealand conditions.

Today, Big Mac Slabs supplies macrocarpa furniture throughout the country, supporting residential, commercial, and public environments alike.

Macrocarpa is naturally suited to New Zealand conditions.

Built for New Zealand Environments

Macrocarpa is naturally suited to New Zealand conditions. It contains natural oils that resist decay and insect damage, without the need for chemical pressure treatment. This makes it a safe, long-lasting option for spaces where people interact with furniture every day.

All Big Mac Slabs furniture is made using New Zealand-grown, sustainably sourced macrocarpa, carefully cut, finished, and assembled with longevity in mind. Our designs prioritise strength, stability, and repairability — furniture that can be maintained over time, not replaced.

More than twenty years on…

Still Local. Still Built to Last.

Big Mac Slabs continues to do things the same way it always has — using quality New Zealand timber, building furniture that lasts, and taking pride in work that becomes part of everyday life.
